Legal Requirements For Food Labels

There are many legal requirements that you must adhere to when creating labels for your food products. For example, food labelling must be easily visible, permanent, clear and easy to read, and not misleading. All information which is mandatory must be printed with a minimal x-height of 1.2 millimetres in order to be considered easily visible and easy to read. This means that if “the largest surface area of packaging is less than 80 cm squared, you can use a minimumx-height of 0.9 mm.” [source gov.uk] Additionally, you also need to show basic information, list the ingredients and show certain warnings depending on the products/ingredients in your food. For example, if any of the ingredients have been irradiated, have come from genetically modified sources,or if any of the ingredients are allergens.

Also, it is important to make sure that your baked goods are packaged in packaging that is suitable for food. You need written evidence known as ‘declaration of compliance’ which means you have kept to the strict special rules for using plastics, ceramics or cellophane for food packaging.

Will Brexit Affect Food Labelling Legislation?

If the United Kingdom leaves the EU without a deal, some new rules will come into effect on exit day; which means you may need to change/update your food labels. For example, in the event of no deal, you must not use the EU emblem on goods produced in the UK unless you have been authorised by the EU to do so.

However, if you’re concerned about your labelling and keeping up with changes to legislation, thanks to our decades of industry experience we can use our knowledge to provide assistance and guidance with your custom printed label requirements.

Why Should You Choose Digitally Printed Bakery Labels?

In addition to providing professionally printed bakery and baked goods labels on flexo (ink) printed, we can also provide full colour digital bakery labels using our Xeikon press which uses food safe coloured toners. Both printing methods have their own advantages and disadvantages so if you don’t have a preference, our team can provide advice with regards to design, material, and printing method. If you chose digitally printed bakery labels using our Xeikon press, you can avoid all plate costs and we can supply free ofcharge press proofs for checking colour and appearance. With digitally printed bakery labels you can include multiple designs with little extra cost allowing you to increase your range in a cost effective way, as well as test out new products with minimum risk.

However,on the other hand, flexo (ink) printed label printing techniques have the ability to varnish the label for protection, printing up to 8 colours, and the ability to print on the reverse side of the material to allow for extra information(such as serving suggestions), it’s a great label printing technique that can be very valuable for medium and large volume projects.

That being said, just because digital labelling is great for small runs of labels,it isn’t exclusively for short runs. The lack of setup helps to keep costs down, which still provides advantages for medium and long label runs. Additionally, you can also enjoy high quality 1200 dpi print and finishing options to provide a touch of luxury to your label such as varnishes, laminates, spot inks, and foiling detail. So if you’re looking for a short run of a few hundred labels, or if you require tens of thousands of bakery labels, we’re confident that you’ll find both our pricing and quality of service second to none.
