What About Legal Requirements?
Labels for food items such as cakes and other baked goods must comply with legal requirements for food labels. In order to be compliant, all food labelling must be easily visible, permanent, clear and easy to read, and not misleading.Additionally, when including mandatory information, this information must be printed at a minimal x-height of 1.2 millimetres in order to be considered easily visible and easy to read. This means that if “the largest surface area of packaging is less than 80 cm squared, you can use a minimum x-height of 0.9 mm.” [source gov.uk].
Other legal requirements include basic information such as the list of ingredients, with appropriate warnings depending on the ingredients/products used in your food items. This could include ingredients which are allergens, ingredients from genetically modified sources, or ingredients which have been irradiated.
Also, it is important to make sure that your baked goods are packaged in packaging that is suitable for food. You need written evidence known as ‘declaration of compliance’ which means you have kept to the strict special rules for using plastics, ceramics or cellophane for food packaging.
Finally,it’s also important to take notice of the political and legal changes surrounding Brexit. If the UK leaves the EU without a deal, some new rules will come into effect on exit day, so it’s very important that your labelling supplier has the experience and knowledge to keep up with any and all changes in label printing legislation.
What Are The Advantages Of Digitally Printed Cake Labels?
Different printing styles have their own advantages and disadvantages. For example, digitally printed labels are a great choice for short runs thanks to their lack of setup. However, just because they’re great value for small label orders doesn’t mean they’re exclusively for short runs. The lack of setup helps to keep costs down for medium and long runs as well as short runs.
Additionally, our full colour labels printed using our Xeikon press use food safe coloured toners which means we can provide full colour digitally printed cake labels. Also, our digital press can provide high quality 1200 dpi print and finishing options including, varnishes, laminates, spot inks, and foiling detail. So if you need a short run consisting of a few hundred labels, or if you need tens of thousands of cake labels, we’re confident that you’ll find both our pricing and quality of service second to none.
Alternatively,if digital printing isn’t for you, the PeterLynn Labels team can also provide flexi (ink) printed labels. This style has advantages of its own including the ability to varnish the label for protection, printing in up to 8 colours, and the ability to print on the reverse side of the material to allow for extra information (such as serving suggestions).
