Telling A Story With Label Design, 3 Tips For Beer Can Label Design

Every brand has a brand identity and a story, a message to share with your customers and those that consume your product, so does your labelling solution properly convey your chosen message, or could you beer can labels be improved?

1. Choose Refrigerator-Friendly Materials
Lagers and other craft beers are often stored in refrigerators; this means that you have to consider both the cold temperatures inside the fridge and the damp and wet environment that your beer cans will be stored in. By ensuring that your labels are made of cold and wet strength materials, you give your product an advantage over bottles and cans using more generic labels.

However, those looking to take their label design to the next level could look beyond refrigerator-friendly materials, and instead design their beer can labels to thrive in refrigerated environments, after all your label will need to read out and inspire purchases, from the chilled comfort of a bar refrigerator. So consider the colours that will be inside a bar’s refrigerator, consider the illumination used, and choose colours that will help your beer to stand out, whilst also being easy to read and ready to recognise. After all, in a brightly lit bar fridge, a dark almost pitch-black bottle with a dark label will stand out from the rest, but as it will be difficult for people to read, they might be disincentivised from purchasing it.

2. Pay Attention To Current Trends
Whilst it is important not to blindly follow the current trends, it’s also important to keep aware of them. For example, did you know that according to data from Morning Advertiser, pale ale is outselling lager? This information can be very beneficial to craft brewers as brewers looking to promote their pale ale beverages will know to ensure that IPA or pale ale is clearly displayed on your labels so customers can read it. On the other hand, it’s also great information for those not producing pale ale. After all, lots of brewers will be following the IPA trend, so by focusing on your other alcoholic beverages and ensuring their labels are eye-catching, such as lager, you could potentially get yourself a ‘bigger piece of the pie’ from the lager drinking community.

3. Don’t Forget Important Legal Information
As beer is an alcoholic product, there are strict rules and regulations that you must follow with regards to your labelling and information that must be included on the label. The current legislation regarding alcoholic products requires that the number of UK units inside your product is clearly displayed. Additionally, you also need to list the recommended safe drinking guidelines, which are a max of 3-4 daily units for men, and a max of 2-3 for women; you must also include a warning for pregnant women about the dangers of consuming alcohol whilst pregnant, which can be in the form of either a written statement or a logo.

It’s important to remember that the UK left the EU in January this year and the transition period is in effect. This means that current rules on trade, travel, and business will continue to apply, but new rules could take effect from January 1st 2021. As such, please remember that legislation can always change, so make sure that your business keeps up to date with any and all changes.
