The pros and cons of different printing processes

There are a number of different printing processes, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

Digital Printing

Pros

  1. Excellent resolution and picture-perfect print quality
  2. Variable & sequential data printing
  3. Low MOQs, fast lead times (5 working days)
  4. Flexibility to change/amend designs quickly and easily
  5. Different label designs can be batched together to create larger more economical orders
  6. Vibrant colours through inkjet printing
  7. Toner-based digital print is safe for use on food packaging labels
  8. Various finishes including hot foiling, gloss & matt UV & TT varnish, rough feel varnish, bespoke spot varnishes etc.
  9. Perforated labels

Cons

  1. Less economical vs. flexographic printing for very high volumes of a single label design
  2. Pantone conversion to cmyk requires colour matching and testing prior to printing.

Flexographic Printing

Pros

  1. The cheapest option for large run orders due to the speed of machines
  2. Ability to match exact Pantone colours
  3. Large quantity sheeting capability including A4 sheets
  4. Can run plain and printed labels
  5. Perforated labels

Cons

  1. Longer set up time, which means shorter runs are expensive
  2. Longer lead times vs. digital printing (7-10 working days)
  3. No flexibility to change designs, with each design change requiring its own plates

Hot Foil Printing

Pros

  1. Ideal for short runs with 1 or 2 colours
  2. Perfect for Write & Seal Labels
  3. Asset and PAT test labels
  4. Wide range of materials and foils are available
  5. Quick set up which is ideal for small quantities

Cons

  1. The use of plates means the flexibility to change designs can add to the lead time
  2. Limited suitability for multicolour designs
